Newcomers and immigration to Thompson have been occurring for many decades.  Vale Inco (formerly INCO) in an effort to obtain labour has been responsible for attracting many newcomers to Canada to live and work in the City of Thompson.  The draw of immigrants having essential specialized skills that are in a critical shortage to Thompson to supply needed labour to Vale Inco’s Thompson Operations continues to this day.  In addition, the Burntwood Regional Health Authority also draws upon the expertise of foreign trained physicians and other health-care professions to fill employment vacancies.  The Thompson General Hospital staffs a number of foreign born/trained professionals that provide quality health care.  Other local businesses too have benefited from the skills and expertise brought with immigrants coming to live and work in Thompson.

As in many other parts of Canada, Thompson suffers from a labour shortage.  Immigration, along with building the capacities of regional Aboriginal and Northern residents are pools of human resources that could help fuel the local and regional economies, and strengthen present-day and future businesses and commerce.

As our population ages coupled with rural depopulation, the size of a workforce shrinks.  Communities across North America and around the world are competing to attract immigrants. Immigration is more and more being recognized as an economic development strategy.  Communities are also realizing work is needed to ensure that immigrants have the supports in place to help convince newcomers to come, as well as stay.

Now offered in the Cityof Thompson are the services of a Newcomer Settlement Services Coordinator.  This individual works with newcomers who have arrived in Thompson.  The office is located at North Central Community Futures Development Corporation.  For further information, please click Page 1 and Page 2 of a special brochure.
