The city of Thompson is a land of immense opportunities, economically speaking, as well as recreationally. It truly is a great place to live, work and play. “Where friends become family!”

Thompson Unlimited, the City’s economic development corporation, has been given the mission of “fostering a dynamic business climate by providing support and resources to grow Thompson as a northern center of diverse economic opportunities and as a community having a well-developed quality of life”. Our vision of Thompson is one of a “dynamic and vibrant community which will be the service capital of northern Manitoba.

As a Regional Service Center for northern Manitoba, Thompson provides many services such as health care, education and government services to the region. Our local businesses offer supports to these services, to the mines within the region, and the community and region at large. However, there is a great deal of room to grow! Many opportunities exist in our local business community in both goods and services. Currently there is a need for mining support, retail, daycare, transportation and more.

A recent customer service survey conducted by TU and UCN showed that 81% of respondents did most of their shopping while in the city for medical, educational, family, recreational or other purposes and that there was a demand among regional shoppers for big box, chain restaurants, and brand name clothing retailers in Thompson.

Investment and development opportunities abound in commercial, industrial and residential developments with the acquisition of three parcels of land totalling 151.82 acres. The housing vacancy rate in Thompson is very low providing opportunities in all sectors of housing. Visit www.thompson.ca/index.aspx?page=90 for available land listing.

The Thompson Tourism Committee was established in February 2011 and recently developed the “Snapshot of Thompson Tourism”. This document speaks to the justification for investing in tourism development and its promotion in the City of Thompson and surrounding region. Opportunities exist as we continue to build Tourism in Thompson and region.

Winter Weather Testing has grown in the last number of years, and we have reached an apex where infrastructure is now required. Currently we service testers in the following sectors: automotive, aviation, recreational vehicles, diesel and heavy equipment. This is a very specialized field where Thompson is host to companies from around the globe. Visit www.thompsonsubzero.ca for more information. We are also the home of Glacier (Global Aviation Center for Icing and Environmental Research). This state-of-the-art jet engine icing facility is a joint partnership of Rolls-Royce and Pratt and Whitney.

As our mandate is to job creation, investment attraction and retention, we would invite investors, developers and anyone interested in learning more about Thompson, the region, and the opportunities to contact the Development Officers at:
