The City of Thompson, “Hub of the North” is the regional trade and service centre of Northern Manitoba. The city is located 830 kilometers north of the international border, and 739 kilometers north of the provincial capital of Winnipeg. Thompson boasts an excellent transportation system of scheduled daily air service, overnight truck delivery, paved roads, and a railway system that connects Thompson with other communities throughout the province and ends at the arctic port of Churchill.
The city is a dynamic northern community of 13,256 residents and serves as a trade centre for an additional 36,000 - 65,000 Manitobans. As such, it has all of the services and amenities that would be expected in a much larger, urban centre.
However, Thompson is unique in that it is set in the ruggedly beautiful Canadian shield, amongst numerous pristine lakes, in the heart of the Boreal Forest. This type of location offers both residents and tourists alike a unique wilderness experience.
A half hour drive south of the city is the scenic Paint Lake Provincial Recreational Park encompassing Manitoba’s largest marina. The shaded picnic grounds are bordered by two sand beaches, picnic tables, playground equipment, family style campground, beaches, lake side cottages, boating rentals and an abundance of fishing.
Another 45 kilometers south is Pisew Falls, the provinces’ highest road accessible falls along the Grass River system.
The city also has a number of fine restaurants and night spots, a scenic golf course, and a river air base, where planes may be chartered for trips to the wilderness. In the winter months Thompson offers downhill skiing and snowbording, cross country skiing, a biathlon range, all at the Mystery Mountain Winter Park.
Snowmobiling is also extremely popular around the Thompson area with more than 200 miles of groomed trails between Thompson and Sasagiu Rapids.
